Late night accidents remind Franklin County drivers to be alert

Everyone is a Pedestrian

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a campaign reminding the United States that “everyone is a pedestrian” at some point in their life. A pedestrian doesn’t just mean a walker. Anyone on foot, standing, walking, jogging, hiking, in a wheelchair, sitting, or lying down can be defined as a pedestrian. If you’ve done one of those things, remember that you’re a pedestrian too, so be cautious when you drive past them. Especially at night.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 65% of pedestrian accident deaths occur at night, and one third of all pedestrian deaths occur between 8 p.m. and Midnight. This is likely due to a combination of factors. Namely, alcohol impairment or decreased visibility.
While we’ve all heard that reflectors are important, a study looked into just how important reflectors are in increasing the visibility of a pedestrian. It found some shocking statistics regarding the color of clothing, and the distance at which a driver will be able to see a pedestrian:

  • – Blue: 55 feet
  • – Yellow: 120 feet
  • – White: 180 feet
  • – A reflector on person: 500 feet!

Keep in mind, it takes 260 feet to stop a vehicle that is driving at 60MPH. Wearing white clothing is better, but it’s simply not enough. As the sun continues to set earlier and earlier, be safe when out walking. We will keep you updated on this story if any additional information is released.
