Rolla Fire Department Responds To Mercury Exposure

Posted on

Rolla, Missouri: On Saturday, April 30th, the City of Rolla Fire & Rescue responded to a hazardous material call at Hy Point Industrial Park.
According to authorities, the call came from a building owned by Rolla Community Development Corporation. ESD EMC Technologies LLC of Rolla, a high technology company specializing manufacturing of test and measurement products made the call.
A small amount of Mercury had been released in Suite C of the building and contaminated one ESD EMC Technologies employee. The exposure was contained the immediate area, and the employee’s contamination affected only his hands. The employee suffered no injuries other than the Mercury Exposure.

Mercury Exposure In The Workplace

To best protect the employee, the company elected to decontaminate. Fire personnel established a shower facility to remove the product and retain all water used. (By collecting the water, the environment is protected from the Mercury spill.)
“In working with hazardous materials, most events require a large group of agencies in order to protect those affected.” Said Fire Chief Ron Smith. “The event was largely successful due to the cooperative work of the Fire Department Personnel, Missouri S&T Environmental Services, S&T police Department, and the Phelps County Regional Medical Center.

Workplace Contamination Attorneys

The workplace is a common place for toxic exposure. Employees in various industries may be exposed to Mercury, Asbestos, Benzene, Toxic Mold, and other hazardous materials.
When someone is poisoned by one of these materials while on the job, they often file a worker’s compensation claim to help pay for their injuries, medical bills, and lost wages. While workers compensation laws protect employers from being sued by employees, a worker’s compensation attorney can help an injured worker through the work comp process.
Additionally, there are certain circumstances in which a case may be brought to trial. For example, if the injury was not due to a company or employee’s negligence, a workplace injury attorney may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit against an outside company.
The avenues of recovery can take a bit of creative problem solving from a personal injury lawyer and may help you recover more than a worker’s compensation claim would. This is why we always urge injured workers to call our injury attorneys at Schultz & Myers Personal Injury Lawyers. Our experienced attorneys will look in every avenue of recovery to ensure that you are reimbursed for your injuries, and pain and suffering.
