Symptoms Similar To Celiac Disease Linked With Benicar
The link between Benicar and the enteropathy was found in a Minnesota study of 22 patients who had been hospitalized for presenting symptoms that mimicked that of celiac disease. However, unlike celiac disease, patients could not manage their symptoms by reducing their gluten intake. Additionally, antibody blood tests did not support a celiac disease diagnosis.
The one thing that these 22 patients had in common was that they had been taking Benicar for their hypertension. When the severely affected patients discontinued their use of the drug, their gastrointestinal symptoms improved, and patients gained an average of 27 pounds.
After the study was released, 40 additional patients were found to have been suffering from similar enteropathy.
The FDA issued a warning regarding about Benicar’s gastrointestinal side effects in July of 2013 which required a label change that would include this risk.
