A new class-action lawsuit against EOS lip balm claims that the balm that keeps your lips feeling “super-soft” may actually cause pretty bad reactions. Several customers are suing the brand because its formula allegedly caused cracks, blisters, and rashes.
About EOS Lip Balm
EOS is the lip balm that seemingly everyone is using. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Gwen Stefani, and Jennifer Lopez endorsing the product.
One of the most heavily advertised drugstore products on the market, the egg-shaped balm costs a whopping $2.99, and has quickly become a cult favorite among beauty bloggers and teens. The brand has 1.3 million followers on Instagram.
The Evolution of Smooth (EOS) website claims that the visibly soft lip balm is enriched with natural conditioning oils, shea butter, and antioxidant vitamins for “immediately softer, more beautiful lips”
Despite these claims, several women and men have been speaking up about their negative experiences with the product. They claim EOS has caused blisters, rashes, and other allergic reactions.
Lawsuit Filed Against EOS
Rachael Cronin was the first customer to come forward, claiming that after just one use, EOS lip balm made her lips feel like “sandpaper.”
After attempting to reapply the product as a remedy for her “sandpaper” lips, this caused bleeding, blisters, and rashes. Her reaction lasted for about 10 days!
Criminal defense lawyer, Mark Geragos, is representing Cronin in a class-action lawsuit against the Evolution of Smooth Lip Balm Company. Cronin is seeking damages and corrective advertising in the lawsuit.
“Ms. Cronin was in severe shock and panic.” The lawsuit says. ““By the next day, Ms. Cronin’s lips and surrounding skin area had severe blistering and rashes causing her to seek medical care…”
Court documents include examples of other individuals who have experienced similar side effects after using EOS lip balm.
Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, told Refinery29 that the rashes could be caused by an allergic reaction.
“Red, itchy or flaky skin may signify an allergic reaction to a personal-care product” said the dermatologist. “If you develop a rash, try to be a detective to figure out what may have triggered it.”
If you experience these symptoms after introducing any new beauty product to your skin, discontinue use right away, and apply cortisone 1% ointment twice daily for a few days. Visit the dermatologist if the situation worsens.
Allure Magazine interviewed cosmetic chemist, Randy Schueller regarding the ingredients found in EOS balms. Schueller noted to potential ingredients that may be responsible for the reactions; Stevia, which is known to cause scaly and itchy rashes, and Citrus oil, which can cause blisters when exposed to sun. (phytophotodermatitis).

It is still unclear what ingredient may be leading to the adverse reactions.
Not The First EOS Lip Balm Complaint…
Rashes and allergic reactions aren’t the only things causing recent backlash against EOS. Just a few months ago, customers began reporting mold growing inside of the egg-shaped containers.
One user wrote under a photo on the company’s Facebook page: “I like EOS as much as the next girl, but I find that they get moldy so I don’t buy them anymore. I get lip balm just as good for half of the price.”
…And Probably Not the Last.
Numerous EOS customers have taken to Twitter and Facebook to share their stories from using the product.
@eos what is in your lip balms? Suffering from dry and discoloured lips since I started using your product daily. I’m very disappointed
