Contaminated eye drops have recently been linked to serious eye injuries. In some cases, these drops may cause eye infections and, in severe cases, lead to a complete loss of vision. Before you use the eye drops sitting on your counter, check that they have not been recalled.
Keep reading to learn more about how to find out if your eye drops have been recalled due to contamination, examples of recent recalls, and whether you may be eligible for compensation for using a defective product.
Look Up Your Product in the FDA Recall Database
The quickest and easiest way to determine whether your eye drops are included in a recall is to search the FDA’s recall database. This database contains information about all recalls and safety alerts concerning FDA-regulated products. Since eye drops are regulated by the FDA, their recall information will appear in the database.
The recall database has an easy search feature, so you can simply type “eye drops” into the search feature to see a listing of all recalls involving eye drops. If you have a specific brand of eye drops sitting at home, then you can type in the brand name to get even better results.
Some eye drops might not actually have the words “eye drops” in their product name. Instead, it may be listed as a “solution” or other more technical term. Refer to and use the terms on the label of your specific product to get more relevant search results.
Recent Examples of Eye Drop Recalls
There have been many recent recalls of eye drops. Some of those include:
Systane Lubricant Eye Drops (Alcon Laboratories)
Alcon Laboratories issued a voluntary recall of one of its products in December 2024. The recall notice states that a potential fungal material was found in a sealed bottle of the eye drops. This type of material could cause eye infections, and the effects may be life-threatening in some individuals.
Apotex (Apotex Corp.)
Apotex Corporation issued a recall for its Apotex-branded eye drops in March 2023. The recall was issued due to cracks in some of the bottle caps. These cracks could contaminate the solution inside. Anyone who had used the affected drops was advised to talk to their eye care provider.
Multi-Symptom Eye Drops (Kilitch Healthcare)
Multiple brands of eye drops from Kilitch Healthcare were recalled in January 2024 due to potential contamination. Unsanitary conditions were found in the manufacturing environment. Since eye drops are supposed to be sterile, this could introduce infections and lead to serious health problems. Consumers were advised not to use these eye drops due to the concern.
Can I Seek Compensation if I Used Recalled Eye Drops?
If you suffered an injury due to the recalled eye drops, you may be able to seek compensation through a product liability claim. Recovering compensation will require you to prove that the eye drops caused your injury. In fact, you may be entitled to recover compensation even if the eye drops you used were not recalled.
In order to get compensation for a defective product, you must be able to prove the manufacturer’s liability.
Defective products usually have one of three legal defects:
- Design defect: An underlying issue with the product’s design, such as the formulation of the drops, made it unsafe to use.
- Manufacturing defect: Problems in the manufacturing process, such as subpar materials or unsanitary conditions, made the eye drops unsafe.
- Marketing defect: There was a lack of clear instructions or safety warning about how to properly use the drops.
Victims harmed by unsafe eye drops or other products may be able to recover both economic and non-economic damages.
