One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash on Eastbound I-44 in Franklin County. Around 7:30 pm on Sunday, a car and a semi-trailer collided just outside of St. Clair, Missouri. Witnesses to the accident say that it appeared the car crashed into the semi’s rear-end.
According to Missouri State Highway Patrol, one person was killed in the crash, and another is in serious condition. Names of the victims have not yet been identified.
The Eastbound lanes of I-44 were shut down on Sunday Evening so that accident crews could clear and investigate the scene. A reconstruction team has been brought to the site of the crash.
Rear-End Tractor-Trailer Collisions

The IIHS has shown evidence that tractor-trailers in the U.S. should have to have under-ride guards similar to those that meet the Canadian standard in order to prevent more fatalities when passenger cars rear-end the trucks. Having these guards will help prevent the cabin of the car from being crushed and potentially saving the lives of those in the lower riding vehicle. Without stricter regulations on the under-ride guards, the fatality and injury rate will not decrease.
